Two Can Play That Game—Gucci Twinsburg
In a stunning Tour de Force, Gucci unveiled looks modeled by 68 sets of identical twins for their Spring Summer 2023 collection. The endeavor took several months to execute, as Creative Director Alessandro Michele and his team conducted model castings for their ambitious task.
The payoff is spectacular. Not only is it a first for a runway show, it also simultaneously begs the question of individuality (and the idea of every person in the world having a doppelgänger).

Twinsburg plays this game, producing a tension in the relationship between original and copy. As if by magic, clothes duplicate. They seem to loose their status of singularity. The effect is alienating and ambiguous. Almost a rift in the idea of identity, and then, the revelation: the same clothes emanate different qualities on seemingly identical bodies. Fashion, after all, lives on serial multiplications that don’t hamper the most genuine expression of every possible individuality.
Playful notes include the ever-present use of sequin in bold color ways and apparel dripping in over-the-top embellishments. This season’s kitsch item was handbags featuring little figurines of the 80’s Sci-Fi monster Gizmo from the popular Gremlins franchise.
VIPS in attendance included Julia Garner, Amandla Stenberg, Elizabeth Stewart, Chiara Ferragni, Olivia DeJonge, Nora Felter, Lee Ji-eun, June Ambrose and more.
