Lucy Boynton — The Future is hers
“You usually hit the ground running. One year, I went from a series called The Ipcress File straight into Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, followed by Chevalier and then The Pale Blue Eye. And I’ve never been happier. I think I wouldn’t be able to do it every year, but I was so content, happy and excited to keep going from project to project that I just loved. I had the privilege of working with people I had previously admired and who were a pleasure to work with on projects I cared about and characters I loved. It felt fulfilling to be on that train and carrying that momentum,” says actress Lucy Boynton.
Having taken first steps in the industry when she was 12 years old with her very first feature role in Miss Potter, Lucy’s built an impressive resume (Sing Street, Murder on the Orient Express, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Politician, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, The Ipcress File, The Pale Blue Eye, Chevalier to name a few) showcasing her chameleonic abilities to bring characters — both fictional and real — and complex stories to life across different genres which all would be hard to fit into these introductory words of this cover feature of ours.
I meet our story protagonist as she greets me warmly on the other end of the Zoom, having dialled in from the city that never sleeps – New York. Fast forward to the very first few minutes of our heart-to-heart conversation (spoiler alert — we both proclaimed our loyalty to playing Christmas music in November and bonded over a collective fascination for gothic stories), and there’s a genuine connection brewing. A pleasant outcome that makes one’s writing job easier whilst unpeeling the different layers of one’s interviewee, but no less thrilling.

During our conversation, Lucy remains engaging, inquisitive, soft-spoken and very much rooted in the present. Her sonorous voice changes when she’s asked about her craft, which helps to paint an even clearer picture (as a broken camera on my side doesn’t help this deed) of a woman fascinated by the magic of film, television and storytelling, and grateful for the opportunities that she’s created for herself and now is also helping to create for others. After all, the future is hers.
